Mrs Armitage on Wheels
The story of the eccentric Mrs Armitage who decides that her old bicycle can be improved by the addition of a range of gadgets and devices…

Customise your bicycle
You will need:
A bicycle
Pens for drawing
Paper and tracing -paper
A range of artefacts selected by the children to add to a bike

  • Read the story to the class focusing on the way in which Mrs Armitage tries to improve her bicycle.
  • Children draw a bicycle from life, either outside or in the classroom. This is probably easier than you might think especially if you encourage the children to include as much detail as possible and to pay less attention to the actual structure. These should be produced as line drawings in pen and if necessary these can be photocopied to make the lines darker.

  • When the drawings are completed give the children a piece of tracing paper to cover their drawings and ask them to draw on any additions they think would improve their bike.
  • These could be captioned with explanatory notes.
  • If possible this activity could be followed up by the class customising an actual bike which could be displayed. Children could be encouraged to bring in their own artefacts such as baskets, umbrellas etc.
